As soon as you have got your bed home you will want to make sure it keeps its shape and comfort for as long as possible. The following tips can help you care for you bedroom furniture to ensure maximum lifespan.
Use a machine washable, preferably linen bedsheet to protect the mattress (and pillows) from staining or any other marks that may appear.
In the early morning pitch back the bed duvet or covers and keep the bed in a the air for an hour to allow body moisture content to evaporate and freshness to pour back into the mattress.
Flip your mattress over every few months to help the upholstery fillings to settle down more evenly. This is a lot like fluffing your pillows only with a larger object. Of course you cannot fluff a mattress.
Do not make practice of sitting down on the edge of the bed. This can very quickly break the springs causing a lot of discomfort during the night
Do not fold or squash a mattress to store or transport it – this can cause permanent damage as well as be a cause for damp to build.
Handles are developed to help you place a mattress on its base in its proper way – do not use the handles to take the full weight of the mattress when moving the mattress around. This can easily break springs or cause the mattress filing to become mishaped and uncomfortable.
Never leave the polythene packaging on a new mattress. Many people do this thinking it will help lengthen the life of the bed however it will only serve to quickly cause damp and mold.
Hoover your mattress and base from time to time to remove fluff and dust. This is best done with a nozzle that has no moving parts. The rotating brushes found inside many hovers are powerfull enough to snag buttons and cause the early makings of a long tear or weakened seam.
When dealing with staining, use mild cleaning agent and warm water, but be careful never to soak the mattress or base. DAMP is key here. A mattress with dampness inside might not be able to dry itself out and eventually cause mold inside the mattress.
Don’t put a new mattress on a base for which it was not intended. A new mattress on an old base can impede comfort as well as having an effect on any guarantees or extended warranties.
